Ragin Cajuns

Pictures: The Kids; Lost the Baby; Springing Tristan from Storage; Catatonic Ladybug and Shy Cinderella.

We're Southerners now, living in Lafayette! (That's pronounced Laffy-ette here.) We like our new home and have a beautiful backyard. I'd let the kids play in it, but they'd be eaten alive by the mosquitoes. I'm told they're particularly bad right now because of all the rain. But is there a dry season in this subtropical wetland? I think I'll just have to spray them before I send them out to play.

There are a lot of critters here in Louisiana. The girls were highly entertained the other day when I reached into a sack and felt something skitter up my arm. After making some noise and dancing around the kitchen, I was able to get the gecko off of me and out the door. I don't dare go barefoot after dark, either, as I once narrowly missed crunching a cockroach during one of my nocturnal wanderings into Tristan's room. I'm not just being a baby - these are large roaches! Despite my frugal nature, I use THREE Kleenex to dispose of the carcasses. (To those who are staying at my house for Christmas: don't worry. Haven't seen one since I put out the roach traps.)

Everything is green here. There's no need to water the lawn or the garden, as it rains almost daily. It's a shock moving from Utah. There, I was always slathering moisturizers on me and the kids. Here, one can't help but feel moist all of the time. It's a good change for us eczema victims. The only things I don't like about the humidity are having to use my windshield wipers when it's not even raining and not having the dishes dry quickly. It's like evaporation doesn't work here.

The kids are adjusting well and are enjoying having full access to their dress-up clothes and toys, after their long stint in storage. Tristan is working on his third tooth and can crawl fairly well. He only crawls when he's desperate, however, as we have no carpet in our new house. :) Landon is taking to PhD school like a fish to water (or, more appropriately, as a bird to air), of course. And me? Well, I like our new place and am working to settle in and find a niche among the sisters of Lafayette. I wish we were closer to our family and friends in the West, but we'll be back there one day.

Welcome to the South! You eventually get used to the humidity, (mostly,) I still hate that my bath towel never gets competely dry. Hmm I have always wanted to see Lousiana and now it seems I have a reason. Glad everyone is settling in.

I loved living in the South except for the bugs and super humid summers. My husband is from Monroe, LA. What fun adventures you'll have!

Emily, you and your crew is welcome anytime! Landon wants to see you, too. We're about an hour from Baton Rouge and 2 hours from New Orleans. And I've noticed the damp bath towel issue, too. Oh-well. Being dry is over-rated. :)

I'm glad you guys are getting settled in. I'm sure the atmosphere, people, and wildlife will grow on you – literally. When Landon finishes his PhD, you’ll probably be reluctant to go on to the next adventure.
ps. Will you put pictures of your house up on facebook or something?

I'm glad that you guys will be able to moisturize! Hooray for that! Sorry about the creepy crawlies. So gross. Very much missing our walks and talks. Good luck trying to find a VT as good as I was. :)
PS - Jeremy told me last night that he wants to get his doctorate. Hmmmm.
