Toucan Tuesday

Landon made this poster to display at the International Fair hosted on the CATIE campus. We had fun trying food from all over Latin America (Brazilian shrimp bobo was our favorite) and listening to the live band. There were even helicopter rides for $60, which we didn't do.

Shrimp Bobo (image from thecookingadventuresofchefpaz.com), a delicious stomach pleaser that's made with orange palm oil, coconut milk, and yucca root. It's made in Brazil, but it's roots are African and was shared by slaves brought over during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade era.

Landon and his team caught a pair of Keel-Billed Toucans a couple of weeks ago, so I took the kids to go check it out. They're going out again today to try to trap another. Watch out, birds, here comes the Toucan Warrior!

Landon's Bring Your Family to Work Day. Note the nets to the right, which are used to catch the birds in their flight path. The team then untangles the toucans and proceed to measure, weigh, and band them. Next Landon attaches the transmitters so he can track their movements. And then they're sent on their merry way, just a few ounces heavier. Next year he'll re-trap them all and remove the transmitters.
