Talking Like Cavemen

The boys enjoying some fall weather this evening while the girls attend a fireside.

The kids sharing some ice cream at Sam's Club.

Dane loves getting his picture taken.  Here one can see the remains of some body art he did with a black Sharpie (by his navel).  And this view of his ribs illustrates the fact that he fell below the first percentile for BMI at his last doctor's visit.  Today he begged me to switch from his carseat to a booster in the van, but I had to explain that he still has 8 pounds to gain before he can swap seats.  So at dinner, when he left the table with his food untouched, I reminded him about the booster.  He returned to the table and ate his whole dinner, with me commenting on how much he was growing with each bite.

Jocelynne snuggles with her friends after seminary.

Aunt Becky and Uncle Gerald got Jocelynne an iPad for her birthday, and it is becoming a constant companion.  She uses it mostly for games and music, but I also frequently catch her practicing Spanish with Duo Lingo.

Back at our favorite restaurant after Logan's soccer game.

Finn and Dad horsing around.

The girls playing with dolls during sacrament meeting, and feeling a bit sheepish about getting caught.

Finn found a soft spot on Chloe and settled in for a nap.

Soccer season is upon us, so I'm driving kids to practices 4 nights a week and going to 2 soccer games each Saturday.  Between that and music lessons and church activities, I feel like I'm constantly on the go.  But it's a lot of fun to see the kids developing their talents and learning to play on a team.  Logan excitedly told me that his coach said players were allowed to shove people with their shoulders to get the ball, so I was worried about him trying this out at his next game.  Fortunately I didn't see Logan ram anyone, and he still managed to get the ball a few times and make some passes.  Tristan often plays defensive positions and likes to boot the ball past everyone to the other side of the field.

The girls are working on their Personal Progress, seeing if they can get everything finished before the program ends in December.  Even if they don't finish, they're having fun inviting other young women to come over and work on it together.

Finn's vocabulary is still limited to "mama" and "da", along with a few ASL signs (milk, more, drink, and all done).  But it's amazing how well he can communicate his needs by pointing and grunting.  As Jocelynne advances into her teenage years, her once vast vocabulary is degrading into a mix of words and grunts.  Whenever Landon and I point this out and ask her to "use her words," she looks at us exasperatedly and gives us a long grunt with an eye-roll.  When Finn's around, he'll perk up and copy her grunt, as if to say, "I know that word, too!"
